An Introduction to choosing a Domain Name and why
A domain name is a word or combinations of words, letters, numbers and symbols that identifies
one or more IP addresses. These are called URLs, and are used to identify a particular website
and the pages that make up that site. Domain names identify your web presence so they need to
be unique, identifiable, recognizable and most of all searchable.
Basically, domain names convert the numerical format that computers use to identify a website
into a text based name that is easy for human users to identify and remember.
The domain registration market is now very competitive with thousands of services operating
around the world, so beware, as with any business, there are some snakes in the grass.
Yahoo WebHosting offers domain registration service, web hosting, 24 hour toll free customer
support, and web design tools. Yes, you might save a buck elsewhere, but the stability and
reliability of their redundant servers, which keep your site up and running, are worth it in my
opinion.
Domain names now have many forms, known as second level domain types. The best known
remains .com.
The various chief type of domain name includes:
.gov - Government agencies
.edu - Educational institutions
.info - Information
.org - Organizations (nonprofit)
.mil - Military
.com - commercial business
.net - Network organizations
Domain name can also be assigned using country extensions. Each country has its own domain
extension, for example:
Regional examples:
.ca - Canada
.de - Germany
.in- India
.mx - Mexico
.th – Thailand
.us - USA
Extended definitions of the most common types:
.COM: - The term is used for commercial purpose. Domain names with the .com extension are by
far the most popular, and can be purchased by any individual or business. These are used for
personal as well as professional purposes.
.NET: - The term is used for network purpose, hence, it is referred .network. This domain
extension was originally designed for technical related websites. However, domains using this
extension can be registered by anyone.
.ORG: - This is related to organization. Hence, it is referred to as. organization. This was originally
designated for non-profit firms and any other organizations that did not fit under the .com or .net
extension, however, any individual or business may now register a .org domain name.
Domain registrations may also consist of third-level names beneath second-level names which
parallel some of the top level domains, using .mx as an example:
.com.mx – Commercial entities (actually unrestricted, like .com)
.net.mx – Network providers (registration limited to qualifying entities)
.org.mx – Non-profit organizations (registration limited to qualifying entities)
.edu.mx – Educational institutions (registration limited to qualifying entities)
.gov.mx – Governmental entities (Mexican federal, state, or local)
Therefore, with all of the secondary level choices, don’t necessarily settle for a mediocre name
when you can get a better one using a different extension.
The selection of domain names is a major consideration when doing business online, and it is
often one of the first issues to be addressed. While a good domain name won't guarantee
success, it can have a positive (or negative) impact on almost every aspect of online business.
A "good" domain is one that is easy to remember and minimizes confusion. If you are acquiring a
name that has the potential to cause confusion, it is generally recommended that you obtain the
most logical variations. This often includes non-hyphenated and hyphenated variations, along
with words that are phonetically similar and common misspellings.
One thing to remember, if you want your site listed in the top spots, use words that are searched
for frequently, but can also contain unique words for distinction. Here is an example.
For this my site, the most common term searched for is webdesign, obviously that word is taken
as well as just about any other common descriptive word combination to make it unique. I tried
hundreds of word combinations, but had to decide, what is the best word to describe my attitude
about web design? Again, the obvious words are already used. So, i started just searching Yahoo
and Google for words to see what came up, and what do you know, there were several other
website design sites that came up! so I did a search for wildwebdesign and sure enough there
was a site by that name, but wildwebdesigner came up with nothing but:

1
Go to page
Go to page
So, what is my point? With my site being new, it hasn't been crawled by the search bots nor is it
yet listed, but my domain name contains two words that separately are listed, by combining them,
there is an empty search term that my site can fill! Click On the image above and see what the
search results are, this domain was registered March 21, 2007, this search was done March 28,
2007, as time goes On, these results will change.
Yes, we will see how that works out, but I have several other domains that I have registered in the
years past and this method works well when you combine outside marketing, such as
newspaper ads etc. Why, say they see an ad somewhere, online or not online, and it catches their
attention but they can't write it down or whatever and have to go by memory. Wild is a word that
sticks, so combining that with a common term, webdesign, it increases the chance that my site
will be at the top of the list when they search.
